Today is Commonwealth Day, an annual celebration observed by people all over the Commonwealth in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Americas, the Pacific and Europe. The Commonwealth is a voice for small and vulnerable states, and a champion for young people. Home to 2.4 billion citizens across both developing and advanced economies, the Commonwealth is 54 countries working together for prosperity, democracy and peace.
As part of our bid to become UK City of Culture 2025, we are proud to partner with the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council (CWEIC). We spoke to Chief Executive, Samantha Cohen about the role that the Commonwealth plays in Southampton.
“CWEIC is proud to support the Southampton 2025 UK City of Culture Bid. The Commonwealth features prominently in the life of this vibrant City - from its busy international port to the students at its two world class Universities to the resident diaspora who proudly bring the influence of their cultures to bear on the local arts and food scene. Southampton embodies the values of the Commonwealth: Equality, Diversity, Democracy, Rule of Law and Freedom of Speech. Southampton’s rich historical ties with the Commonwealth as a trading port have made it the dynamic, business hub that it is today with innovation, creativity and excellence as its hallmark.”
Samantha Cohen CVO, Chief Executive of the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council.
This year Commonwealth Day celebrations are taking place virtually under the theme ‘Delivering a Common Future: Connecting, Innovating, Transforming’. The day presents an opportunity for individuals, communities and organisations to promote the Commonwealth’s shared values of peace, democracy and equality, and celebrate the association’s rich diversity.
